Swartland In Full Colour

Tastes like: Blackberry. Damson. Black Cherry. Clove. White Pepper. Dark Chocolate. Tobacco. Smoky Spice. Smooth Structured Tannins.

This is one of those gloriously bold Swartland reds that somehow manages to feel both wild and beautifully put together at the same time. Rich, spicy and packed with personality,

Chakalaka is Spice Route’s signature blend — a six-grape mash-up inspired by the famous South African spicy relish of the same name. The 2022 vintage combines Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan, Petite Sirah and Tannat, all sourced from dry-farmed bush vines planted across the rugged Swartland region.

The vineyards grow on deep iron-rich Koffieklip and decomposed granite soils, helping produce wines with serious concentration whilst still retaining freshness and structure. Grapes are hand harvested and fermented separately in open concrete fermenters before ageing in seasoned French and American oak barrels for around twelve months.

Spice Route was founded by Charles Back, one of the pioneering figures of the Swartland wine movement, helping transform the region into one of South Africa’s most exciting fine wine hotspots.

Absolutely glorious with slow-cooked beef, smoky braai food, lamb shoulder or anything involving open flames and second helpings.
