If you've never come across Kerner before, you're in for a treat. Imagine Riesling with a little more texture, a touch more generosity and the same mouthwatering freshness. Bright, aromatic and brilliantly food-friendly, this is one of those wines that makes you wonder why more people aren't talking about it.

Kontrapunkt is made by Chaffey Bros Wine Co. from the Fechner Vineyard in Eden Valley — home to Australia's only planting of Kerner, a German crossing of Riesling and Trollinger first developed in 1929 by August Herold. The Fechner family introduced the variety to Australia after sourcing cuttings during a research trip to Germany, and Chaffey Bros released the country's first varietal Kerner in 2016. 

The 2024 vintage is produced from 100% Kerner. The fruit is whole-bunch pressed before undergoing a wild fermentation on full solids in stainless steel, preserving the variety's purity while building a lovely textural palate. Chaffey Bros describe it as "white wine for the red wine drinker" thanks to its creamy mouthfeel balanced by bright natural acidity. 

Expect vibrant citrus, crisp pear, delicate stone fruit and citrus blossom, underpinned by a subtle savoury note and a beautifully mineral finish. It's wonderfully fresh, quietly complex and just different enough to make every glass an interesting one without ever becoming hard work.
