Welsh Noir
Tastes like: Golden Kiwi. Braeburn Apple. Toasted Almond. Jasmine Tea. Fine and Delicate Mousse.
We’re big fans of Blanc de Noirs sparkling wines which are so generous in the glass - so we were super excited to taste Ancre Hill’s newest release, their 100% Pinot Noir Welsh sparkling wine from the marvellous 2018 vintage.
The Ancre Hill team comprise of husband and wife Richard and Joy and resident South African winemaker Jean du Plessis - who proudly follow a regenerative philosophy in the vineyard and a low intervention approach in the winery (which is so sustainable it’s even built out of hay bales!)
To make this remarkable, traditional ‘champagne method’ sparkling wine, 100% biodynamically grown Pinot Noir grapes from their estate are handpicked and added to the press in whole bunches with only free run juices used, before undergoing wild fermentation with no SO2 inoculation.
After 15 months maturation in stainless steel and concrete eggs, the wine is blended and bottled with no filtering or fining and then undergoes a stonking 4 years and 9 months of ageing on the lees before riddling and disgorging.
The team then add a zero sugar dosage ready for the second fermentation in the bottle - resulting in a brut nature style wine packed with oodles of depth of character and finesse.
This is a World Class sparkling wine from Wales and will certainly give any grand cru from Champagne or other notable fizz producing regions a run for their money 🏴
