Describing himself as a small winemaker in a big pond, Mancunian Antonio Rizzo is a man of our own hearts, producing wines with unconventional pizazz, a natural approach and a clean conscience.
Having honed his skills working in wineries across the globe he doesn’t have his own vineyards but instead hunts down grapes from his vigneron chums to make his own bodacious bottles.
SET is the Catalan word for thirsty, and the wine harks from the Priorat region of the same principality. It’s made with 100% organically farmed Garnatxa (aka Garnacha) whose roots have to grow deep into the Catalonian schist soil, themselves thirsty for water and nutrients.
After harvesting the grapes are fermented with 30% whole bunches to add some extra fruitiness. After a long, patient maceration only the free run juice goes into this wine and after almost two years ageing in old oak the result is a complex, rich wine which will age for a decade or two… or until the next Summer of love.
The 2017 vintage already has a few years ageing under its belt and so there’s some really lovely developed flavours on the nose and palate. Yum.
As well as having an eye for detail in the winery, Antonio wanted an equally compelling label and he chose a Carmarthen born artist called Swci Delic to design this psychedelic, image which looks like it comes straight out of the rave archives. PLUR!
