Today is Earth Day, a global date to jointly deliberate how we can reduce mankind's negative impact on the environment as well as taking action to actively repair Planet Earth. After all it's the only planet with wine!

Each year we celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd. While we work to appreciate and love this planet every day, this is a special day on which we recognise the importance of taking care of our shared home. Earth Day first began in 1970 and has since grown to be the largest secular observance in the world, marked by more than a billion people being mobilised every year as a day of action to change human behaviour and create global, national and local policy changes. Over 190 nations celebrate and recognise Earth Day. The Earth Day Organisation leads worldwide efforts to drive meaningful change through climate action, science and education, people and communities, conservation and restoration, and plastic and pollution.

At the start of this year we committed to trying to become a carbon net zero vintner and so far Chilled & Tannin customers have helped us OFFSET OVER 11 TONNES OF CO2, that's the equivalent to over 2000 trees saved 🌲 😎 👏🏼

But we want to go one step further and actively give back to Mother Nature and so we're pledging from today to PLANT ONE TREE FOR EVERY WINE ORDER WE RECEIVE. 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳

But we can't just plant trees anywhere (we did check) so these trees will be planted by @ecologi_hq as part of their responsible projects around the globe and will offset the carbon of every Chilled & Tannin delivery. Happy days!

And for extra kudos our customers also have the opportunity to offset the CO2 footprint generated in producing their wine using the bodacious @ecocart.io function at checkout on our website. EcoCart offsets the carbon dioxide generated from orders by calculating the exact amount of carbon your order emits, and then offsetting that specific amount. EcoCart is able to offset by donating to projects that go through rigorous carbon offset laboratory and field testing. They only fund projects that are carefully vetted, ethically proven, and scientifically verified according to the world's major carbon standards. Their projects are also third-party verified with site visits by their trusted partners to ensure successful calculation of greenhouse gas reductions and management of funds. We choose to support the Brazil Compost Project. 

Over in Brazil, this project reduces 12,600 tons of carbon dioxide each year, or 126,000 tons over the 10-year life of the project, by recycling swine waste and converting it into compost. In doing so, the project protects the local water supply and the environment from potential contamination from waste run-off. Previous methods of waste disposal produce significant amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas 84 times more potent than CO2, in the first 20 years after its release. Changing to a composting system will help eliminate this excess production of methane and the harmful effects it has on the environment.

We also make sure that we also use Offset, a nifty little app by Shopify. This allows every order placed to make a small contribution to offsetting the carbon impact. This goes directly Pachama, supporting the brilliant Jari Pará, an avoided deforestation project. This preserves 50,480 hectares of primarily virgin Amazon forest. Over the project's 30-year lifetime, it is expected to sequester nearly 15 tonnes of carbon emissions.
