AN/2, Anima Negra, Mallorca
Sun, sea, sand and decks
Tastes like: Red and black fruits. Dark chocolate. Toast. Tobacco. Smooth tannins.
The Balearics might not be the first destination that comes to mind when it comes to bibulous bangers – but our wine buyer Alex reports back on a breakthrough wine scene in Mallorca.
This sun soaked island has long churned out crowd-pleasing local wines but it also boasts a progressive line up of exciting sustainable producers.
And amongst the headline acts are Anima Negra – a.k.a. Miquel Ángel Cerdà and Pere Obrador – who produce naturally farmed and authentic wines along with back2back support from Xavier Ausàs, previously a winemakers at the legendary Vega Sicilia.
AN/2 is a beautifully crafted and complex red wine made from Mallorca’s resident indigenous grapes varieties; Callet (65%), Manto Negro, Fogoneu plus a support act of Syrah.
Aged for 13 months in 80% French Oak and 20% American barrels this beautifully balanced wine jumps out the glass with a crescendo of red and dark fruits, sweet spice, dark chocolate and cigar box.
The concentrated flavours and supple tannins give AN/2 a euphoric finish which will have you screaming for an encore.
It’s the perfect bottle to uncork from sunset sessions right through to sunrise!
