Carignan - the flagship in many a cellar a la sud de France.

Tastes like: Blackcurrant. Black Plum. Sweet Spice. Garrigue. Vanilla.

Our wine buyer Alex explored the Languedoc on his first-ever voyage of wine discovery and was absolutely bewitched by the region's wines, which are ripe and rustic.

He drove back to Britain with a car full of bottles and a lifelong affection for these wines which still represent ludicrous value for money.

Carignan is one of the trademark grapes and this wine comes from old vines, which deliver added complexity and character. A guilt-free weekday wine but easily good enough to pair with your Sunday roast.

Great value wine

I bought this wine after tasting it at a wine bar in Edinburgh. It's one of the best I've tasted for £10.

Unusual, in a very good way.

Carignan is often used as part of a mix of grapes, and Carignan on its own used to be a wine to avoid. This wine is neither of those. It's fruity, long in the mouth and quite full bodied for its strength (12.5). We drank it with pan-fried pork chops, but it's tasty enough to drink on its own, too.
