2021 saw Miguel Merino Snr rightly take his place in Tim Atkin's prestigious hall of fame for legendary Rioja producers. Sadly, it was only months later than the great man passed away.
Señor Merino spent years exporting cooperative wines until, in the 1990s, he converted an old farmhouse into his own small winery in Briones, seeking tough vineyard plots around the town which nobody else wanted to farm.
Working with his son (also Miguel), they combined traditional horse power and hand picking with modern methodology to produce finely crafted and elegant wines. And Miguel Jnr will now continue to build on his father’s legacy with wines like this one.
This rare 100% Mazuelo is only produced in special vintages and spends 12 months in French and American oak and a concrete tank. It's full bodied and powerful yet meticulously balanced.
Part of our LAID DOWN & TANNIN range this wonderful wine will benefit from a few years more in bottle and will be undoubtedly worth the wait.
