Rioja Mazuelo de la Quinta Cruz 2018, Miguel Merino, D.O.Ca Rioja Alta
A true master is an eternal student - Master Oogway
Tastes like: Red fruits. Ripe plum. Lavender. Black pepper. Fig. Tobacco. Coffee. Leather. Tobacco. Structured tannins.
Miguel Merino rightly takes his place this year in Tim Atkin's prestigious hall of fame for legendary Rioja producers.
And despite making phenomenal, critically acclaimed wines for decades the Bodegas continues to evolve its wines and refine its style.
Señor Merino spent years exporting cooperative wines until, in the 1990s, he converted an old farmhouse into his own small winery in Briones, seeking tough vineyard plots around the town which nobody else wanted to farm.
Working with his son (also Miguel) they combine traditional horse power and hand picking with modern methodology to produce finely crafted and elegant wines.
This rare 100% Mazuelo is only produced in special vintages and spends 10 months in French and American oak. It's full bodied and powerful yet meticulously balanced.
Sustainable - Hand harvested
Spain - 2018 - 14% - 75cl
